Gravy Waltz, co-written by legendary jazz bassist, Ray Brown and original Tonight Show host, Steve Allen, has been a jazz waltz favorite since the 1960's. Steve Allen was personally supportive of all up and coming jazz players... this included the Hessions.
Over the years the LA Times had several features on the Hessions. After one rather nice article we arrived at a jazz club, where we had an ongoing engagement, to find a rather large package had arrived with our names on the label. We were very surprised to see Steve Allen's name and address as the sender. We were very grateful to find a large amount of CD's, tapes, manuscripts and sheet music which were written by Steve Allen and his various musical partners. We were absolutely blown away by the great music! Steve Allen also developed a jazz show for PBS. Some videos can be found on YouTube, one that I can think of is Oscar Brown introducing Phineas Newborn as well as several Miles Davis cuts from the 1964 Steve Allen show. One of our favorite Steve Allen stories involves "The Piano of MaryAnn Jackson". That is for another day.
Jim plays the jazz waltz, (Gravy Waltz) while recording at the Word of Mouth Studio in New Orleans.

  • Do you know how to play Liza by James P. Johnson? If you do, can you make a video of it?

  • Liza was written by George and Ira Gershwin from the musical comedy "Show Girl"in 1929. It is a great standard. I will record this at some point in the next couple of months

  • ...Well, she really ran to get her frying pan

    When she saw me coming

Im gonna get a taste before it goes to waste

    This honeybees humming

Mister Weeping Willow, Im through with all of my faults

cause my babys ready to do the ever new gravy waltz

Mr Weeping Willow, Im through with all of my faults

cause my baby is ready to do the ever new gravy,

    Mmm, nice gravy dear, waltz.

  • Great stuff. Thanks. It brings back many memories. Now I have to go visit the fern dock. Later

  • Sounds like the cue for Steve to ring the hotel bell in the middle of Professor Irwin Corey's diatribe!

I actually made an appearance on the Steve Allen show while in college playing glockenspiel with the Red Garter Jazz Band in a parade following a baby elephant in a red vest and straw hat.................ahhhhhhhhhhh those were the days. I can't believe that I admitted this.

  • Smock, smock, indeed! Don't let yer fern get caught in yer kreel!

  • bravo. I had never heard this all the way thru.

    and a big smock smock...

  • I was reminded of this song after watching the segment about Steve Allen on the PBS "Pioneers of Television." This performance is awesome!
