Here at my court reporting school, we are constantly reminded of this fact of using briefs. One of our teachers also brings up the fact that she only used one brief. Everything else she spelled out. Pretty amazing accomplishment if you ask me.
As a court reporting student, I made it my business to memorize as many phrases as possible. It makes for faster writing. LAIJ = ladies and gentlemen. LAIRJ = ladies and gentlemen of the jury. If you wait until the speaker says either of these phrases, you've only got to hit one stroke to get the whole thing down. Makes life easier, IMHO.
