A founding member of Split Enz and Citizen Band, Mike Chunn is currently CEO of the Play It Strange Trust which implements music programmes for New Zealand schools. From '92 to '03 Chunn was also Director of NZ Operations for the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) which represents Kiwi songwriters in the collection of public performance and broadcast royalties.

@Babyhowdy233 - true..... but the point of the exercise was to highlight that between the age of 8 and 18... imagination is not encouraged in the schooling system. its drummed out of youngsters. although I'm sure more than 2 out of 250 could actually write a song, only 2 at that instance had the confidence to put their hand up. its actually a very accurate survey, because its not about song-writing ability.... it's about self-belief

Speaking as someone who has worked with kids of all ages I'd have to say I disagree with Mike's conclusion here. It isn't that teenagers have less imagination than when they were younger..I have yet to find ANYTHING on this earth with the imagination of a teenager..but rather that by the time a person reaches their teens they understand music as a far more COMPLEX mode of human expression than they perceived it to be when they were little. They expect MORE of themselves than a kid does.
