A solar plane with wings as wide as a 747 and the power of a small motorboat took to the skies for the first time, cruising for nearly one-and-a-half hours in a step toward becoming the first sun-powered aircraft to circle the world. (April 7)

  • Aerodynamically I'm not sure this is the best design. I think a flying wing with lighter than air bladders would increase surface area for thrust energy to maximize solar efficiency and translate it into forward movement.

  • @thomaserossi

That is research and development. The plane would be far, lets say 2 million, once reproduced. The budge pays all the top notch scientist and engineers top dollar during design phase.

  • @applesweeter

Not sure about love but to travel long distances in a short time is awesome by what ever means.

  • Dear All,

I have some questions about psychology:

    (1) Why do we love flying?

    (2) Why do we want to build solar powered aeroplanes?

    (3) What idea and social principle does this solar powered aeroplane promote and campagin?

    (4) How will we feel if we can see the shining sun in our entire journey of flying?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your ideas and barinstorm!!! :)

  • the pilot will die in hunger when trying to cross the ocean at that velocity XD anyway, a really cool advance in aviation!

  • @thomaserossi It's for the sake of discovery, not for a profit... -_-

  • @thomaserossi In hindsight, such an aircraft would be nearly useless except for surveillance/endurance purposes, and will perform poorly at that. Although regarding your comment, I'd like to point out that there is no need to be abrasive against me for I am neither a liberal nor an aerospace expert.

  • This plane is a fucking waste of money!

    94 million dollars!?

With a price tag of $94,000,000 it would take 10,000yrs of constant flight to make back its money because it doesn't seat 2000 people.

  • @THISNAMEOWNS - bulk cargo? Are you stupid?! If it could carry "bulk" it would seat 250 people minimum. It isn't "speedy" because it has no power. Ergo, it cannot carry "bulk cargo."

    Damn, Liberals are fucking retards!
