The ritual depicted was NOT the sun dance. It is known as The Vow To The Sun. The sun dance is totally different and it involves a number of warriors not just one. It took a brave, brave man to undertake the vow to the sun and not many warriors committed themselves to it. A guy who worked on the actual movie said, "Richard Harris has a lot of balls" If he said that, then R. Harris more than likely endured the actual ceremony for the movie.
These guys went to a lot of trouble to get someone to translate the English into Lakota words...it completely fails to grasp the heart of the culture or the ceremonies it so abysmally misrepresents. Horse would not have been a name of derision, but of honor. The Lakota considered all creatures as relatives...still do.
This is not history, my relatives. This is not the culture as it was. Read something by the people if you want to understand it.

It say's in the intro of this movie that it is "Dramatized",
So it means , it is "Exaggerated " NOT BASED ON THE REALITY!

It is a painful scene. Would you consider The Last Samurai to be A Man Called Horse in Japan?

Not sure if I like it or not or if it really represents historical reality.
