Some short video clips of amphibian mating activity at a pond in Napa Co., California in late February, 2009. The photos mostly show aggregations of mating newts ('newt balls'). A few overly-excited male pacific chorus frogs also appear in some clips trying to mate with the newts.

The sounds in the background are the calls of a few hundred male pacific chorus frogs.

  • The frogs may try to mate with the salamanders, but they cannot produce viable offspring. Additionally, there are a lot of mechanical barriers that prevent frog sperm from getting to salamander eggs. For example, these frogs have external fertilization, but the newts have internal fertilization.

  • nice

  • Ah dude! You should upload this to Nature: Caught In The Act! Just don't tell them is Napa County! Tell them it's in Butte, because their station doesnt cover Napa County!

  • This is a very interesting video. The Californian newts appear to have love on their minds long before their European cousins.
