In this ten step video tutorial, I will walk you through the steps necessary to copy most any key... even if you only have access to it for a brief period of time (say, less than ten seconds).

Steps include taking a picture of the key, quickly measuring it, making a template, transferring the template, and finally cutting the key. You only need to physically have access to the key for a mere matter of seconds, long enough to measure and snap a photo or two.

Or, say you have access to a key for a while: you can just trace the old key (even one marked "DO NOT COPY") onto a new blank (go to a department store and look for the blank yourself - most stores won't help you at all) and dremel away.

This really is a neat trick that should be used responsibly. I use it to make copies of my friends' keys without having to deprive them of their keys for an extended period of time.

PS The standard house key is #66 here in the US. The reason for taking two pictures initially is so that you can find the most correct blank at the store... make sure it fits into your lock before cutting : )

  • why not just use blue dykem on the blank key, place the original key the the dyed blank and trace the grooves onto the dyed key with a sewing needle? It would eliminate the need of taking pics of a key and manipulating it on the PC. Blue Dykem is a dye used on metal to trace what to machine of he metal.

  • There are so many ways to do this . . . this particular example is for the at home DIY'er that probably doesn't have access to dykem. -- But, a great idea!

  • wat happend to ur iphone?

  • I get so frustrated with iPhone 2.0 that it has to die

  • Crazy shit been needing acces to a safe for a long time now so im guna copy the key i need lol how do i apply this with patterned keys ? same method? and wat do u use to measure?

  • So, when you measured the length of the key using a dollar bill around thirty-five seconds, you can then take the dollar bill and measure how long the marking is... using a ruler.

But if you were asking about how one would measure a patterned key... you'd have to show me what that is... just post back with a link to the image : )

  • I just traced my apartment key onto a blank key with a sharpie marker and made a duplicate using a Dremel. The duplicate I made actually works better than a duplicate which was made at the store.

  • That's alot of work. Why not just get it copied at locksmith? Why are you even trying to copy key yourself in the first place? You must have alot of spare time on your hands

  • have you tried it on car keys?.. i lose mine a lot

  • VISION ONE BY ROYKSOPP :D

  • I am a locksmith and have ben for a long time, this will work if its done right, but you first key is a wiser WR5 and you copied it to a kwikset KW1. that will work, only because the kw1 is thiner than the wr5, but if you went to other way a wr1 will not go into the kw1 lock cylinder, know what key you star with is The most importent thing you can do...

BTW most new Sledge keys have the cuts stamped on them, read the 5 numbers call a locksmith and they will cut you one by code that will work

  • I'd use a scanner.

  • Or you can just trace the original key onto a blank then dremel it.

You might have to change the dimensions i.e. 300 Dots per inch to 72, or check what the settings are on your printer, alternatively you can change the size by using the Square and Compass tool looks like a square on it's corner, you can change the dimensions as well.

  • Perhaps I have no patience to do this myself.

I have some keys with old stuck on gum . Can a locksmith copy them?

Or am I going to have to spend hours cleaning this stuff off and lose my patience and smash my iphone like this guy.
