Colourful, hygienic and nicely packaged: supermarket food is the same wherever you go in the world. But the packaging often contains dangerous toxins that can enter the food chain and pose serious health risks.

All over the world the same products are shipped into our supermarket chains. They are made to last as long as possible and look as eye catching as they can - presentation is everything. But food scientists are sounding the alarm bells. Packaging often contains dangerous toxins that can seep into the food it is meant to protect. Only a few of these toxins are known to us and only a few have been tested for their possible effects on human health. "I estimate that various types of packaging contain about 100,000 substances in a concentration that could well be relevant" says food chemist, Dr Konrad Grob. Despite hundreds of studies highlighting possible health risks such as hormonal imbalances and infertility, the EU has been unable to protect consumers. "It's a complicated issue. You've got lots of different national administrations, national legislations, different cultures", says Joe Hennon, a spokesperson for the European Commission for Environment. A ban on toxic substances and printing colours is overdue and it's not likely to happen any time soon.

  • Thanks for this awareness-raising upload. THUMB UP!

Let's hope that people react and change their buying behaviour.

BUY LESSER Packaging! Fresh food is healthier anyway!

The earth and the sea says thank you too.

Watch the film "Plastic Planet" and you'll understand more how people destroy the planet and their own life...

“Plastic Planet in english by Werner Boote - full 1hr35min”

Save the sea and the earth; we have only this planet!

  • @iTouchin Who do you think is "someone" besides yourself?

No one is forcing people to buy the plastic, they are free to play the game of the system. Check your own household. It became worse in the last 20 years. People drink mostly out of plastic bottles etc. before they throw them away!

"Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the earth." (Albert Schweitzer)

Every new day can be a start for a change! :D

  • That french chick is hot.

  • i'll continue buying packaged foods, infact i'll buy more than ever. To add on top of that, i'll toss it out into the nearest source of water.

  • Thanks for posting this video.

  • I am the only one in my family that can smell the toxins from plastic bags we use. The smell leeches into your food and then your food tastes like plastic. Why can most of us not taste this? I can smell plastic fumes in cereal, sandwich bags and on plastic plates. Some plastic bags have no distinct smell and the are the store brands. Bags like Ziploc and Hefty have a strong smell.

  • Wow I'm planing on eating more veggies, cut out processed and red meat, cut my intake of fish But it seems like no matter what you can't completely avoid the poisons. I'm pretty sure my very laptop is shooting poisons through my skin as I type this *sigh*

  • @Ilkamy "get educated"? That wasn`t nice. I am educated & educated enough to be able to look at every country that has tried communism & the result has been oppression of the ppl. Your belief is "Political education & control & participation through direct democracy". That is fine, but I`d rather die than live in that society. Political control & education leads to oppression & direct democracy smashes out the minority voice. I prefer individual freedom of education & lifestyle choice.

  • this is a very informative video the denmark scientists were great!

  • how does "there are toxins in food packaging that are causing obvious health impact" turn into a complicated issue? It seems like the interviewee didn't have any good answer and just turned to a canned jargon response.

What this makes me wonder is why someone like that can be in a position where they are the go-to person for such an interview. The mother that's interviewed later seems to have more information than the guy in an office wearing a suit. That says something about these issues.

  • OK SO THEY STERILISE CANNED CORN WHY DO THEY SOAK IT IN THAT NASY SUGAR/SALT WATER THEN???

& THE CANS IN ENGLAND DONT HAVE NO WAXY LAYER INSIDE OF THEM NONE THAT IVE EATEN OUT OF ANYWAY

  • @paisleyyama Get educated.

What communism you're talking about? Do you mean the parties which bear the name and say they aspire this form of society?

So far, national efforts have failed; especially through representative parliaments and the fact that class domination hasn't been overcome.

Capitalism has triumphed = exploitation of man by man for profit maximisation & power interests.

Political education and control & participation through direct democracy are an important key! ☮
