I first saw this in it's edited form, the farts were replaced with horse whinnying. I think the two together would have been even funnier - farting so bad they upset the HORSES (LOL).

Well said. Of course he didn’t pay much attention to what “they” told him nor did he need to, … since Mel already had had the wits to put a director’s-final-cut decision clause into the contract with the embarrassed studio. If he hadn’t we would never have had this scene in the original released film. [How I do love the tidbits of the commentary tracks].
