Teochew opera: 碧血瑶阶 1

A tale of court intriques, treachery, and lost love.

The young emperor ascends the throne, after much court intriques and tribulation. Loyal and disloyal officials, gathering at the new Emperor's first audience, show open disdain and dislike for each other. It is time to punish members of the imperial family who had plotted to put the young emperor's life in danger, but many treacherous and self-serving officials are still around, waiting for the next opportunity to strike at the throne.

Note the 'quiet loudness' of the majestic sound of Teochew Big Drum music 朝州大锣鼓 - now ordained as one of the 7 Living Heritage Music of Chinese culture.

The Fujian Province Yun Xiao Teochew Opera Company of China 副建云霄朝戏团 performed for 20 nights from 28th Sept 2010 at the FengShan Temple 风山宫, Defu Lane, Singapore. Part of the birthday celebration of the Ninth Emperor God 九皇大帝 of the temple. This excerpt is from the performance on the 15th Oct.

Thanks for the synopsis of the performance. It helps me to undertand the story better. Havng live in the UK for over 30 years and not using my teochew dialect skills on a daily basis, I find it rather difficult to follow the plot sometimes. So thanks again.
