Sing-a-long with Empire...from the classic CD 'Expensive Sound' 1981, 1986, 2002. One of the inspirations for the Emo movement. Empire was the band formed by Derwood and Laff after leaving Billy Idol and Generation X in 1980.
Precoda's an english teacher now. He had a band, Last Days of May that put out an album a while back- kinda psychy, prog sounding stuff. He played out of tune a lot, but he had a great, unique approach. His replacement in the DS, Paul Cutler was a fantastic gtrst too. Always thought "LA Hardcore" was far less generic than Boston '82-style thrash of Jerry Kids et al. and it cross-pollinated w/ a lot of post-punk, roots rock etc.. Kraut were pretty cool, rockin' stuff w/ a metallic edge.
@cubistblues well, you must know yer shit if you mentioned Karl Precoda, I thought he was really sharp and stood out from all the typical hardcore LA stuff, and a nice guy to boot. Doug Holland from Kraut was also pretty innovative and influenced a lot of the metalcore stuff that came later in the 80s (slayer metallica etc) both never recognized !
@sutcliffe62x Derwood was a great guitarist, but no matter how much cult allure he might have he couldn't write songs. But if you want hypnotising, top notch, original playing AND songwriting, it may be time to pull out Marquee Moon again. US early 80s?? Maybe try Peter Buck, Bob Mould, Roger Miller, Glen Mercer, Bob Quine, Jody Harris, D.Boon & Karl Precoda. Better than Levene? Gimme a break . And if you put him against John McGeoch, forget it. The greatest UK guitarist of the new wave era.
we could never have created such a fine sound like this here in the states back then, we were all just too crude, and this riff is way better than anything that say kieth levene or roland howard were doing at the time. really hypnotizing and top notch.
