Robbie 9 is a new autnomous robot built by the working group 'Aktives Sehen' at the University of Koblenz-Landau. At the end of the summer semester 2007 Robbie 9 has participated in a competition called 'SICK robot-day', held by a well-known laser range finder manufacturer called SICK. At the competition the car was supposed to drive completely autonomously and as fast as possible through a 100m long outdoor track. The main visual sensor used by the robot was a laser range finder which was donated by SICK. The data acquired this way was then used to identify the track in real time in order to plan a good path. A special challenge posed the fact that the robot had to be built from scratch just for this competition. Apart from this, the competition was to be held outdoors which impedes self-localization and the actual car control due to the uncertain track conditions.
