The tremble in Bale's voice as he asks to see Paul Allen's card, is perfect. You really get a sense of how hard it is for Bateman to control is emotions whilst sitting around the table. And people call him wooden. HA.
The ending of this movie is anything but meaningless Gongxia. Watch it again, or maybe you don't understand the decadence, uber-conformity or just plain snobbery of the eighties. The point of this movie, while hyperbolic, is that everyone looks and acts the same, constantly mistaking each other, especially Patrick. The killings are swept under the rug, so to speak, so as to not cause trouble. No one is really sure who's who, let alone who's killing, in a city that doesn't care.
