Hindu Shrine Embroiled In Land Dispute

Hindus are seeing red after the Kashmir government rescinded its order to transfer land for a Hindu shrine. Widespread demonstrations in India's northern region have turned violent. Here is more on the story.

STORY:
The Kashmir government had planned to transfer land to build shelters for Hindu pilgrims visiting Amarnath, a cave shrine.
But faced with huge Muslim protests, it cancelled its order, sparking large Hindu demonstrations in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On Monday, police opened fire on different groups of protesters, killing three people --further exasperating an already volatile situation.

The Bar Association of Kashmir joined the ongoing protest.

[Nazir Ahmed Ronga, Kashmir Bar Association President]:
"We want to appeal to the responsible people of the United Nations that they come here and see the atrocities we are facing and what is happening in Jammu."

The protests have polarized Indian Kashmir, split between the Muslim-majority region around Kashmir valley and the Hindu-dominated region around the city of Jammu.

The land-shrine controversy has led to some of the biggest Muslim-Indian protests since 1989.
