http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ - Orville and Wilbur Wright were remarkable inventors, mechanics, risk-takers, and visionaries. They designed and built their own wings, steering devices, engines, and wind tunnel. But just how did they construct such an impressive flying machine?

  • Does anyone else wanna squeeze the cheeks of the bald dude with glasses?

  • I don't think the wright brothers were the first to fly,but they were the first to build a controllable aircraft that could be piloted by a human. There were many failures and many deaths trying to achieve controlled flight.

  • @JudgeGrif Thanks for not cursing and giving me the answer to explain to others because of the key word sustained. This type of thing is happening to me and will make me and others hundreds of millions. I have discovered a revolutionary way to trade in the markets( Fx, Futures,Options etc.) The great thing is unlike the Wright brothers I don't have to risk life and limb. I have used demo accounts and paper trading and see SUSTAINED 800% monthly gains at levels under 500k. $100 turned into 10,000

  • @elliotberg "does it really matter what country a person is from?" It certainly seems to matter if the person is an american lol....

  • @inagod LOL! The Wright Brothers brothers aren't the first to fly because the eagles flew before them! :)

  • GLIDING and FLOATING (balloon) are not the same as FLYING!

Santos Dumont couldn't even control his aircraft. He was merely power gliding.

  • @inagod You don't think the wright brothers are the first to fly?

    Are you freaking kidding?!

TRUE FLIGHT is "sustained" (60 minutes or more) and controlled (you can turn and do circles); Both of which the Wright Brothers did.

This is different than GLIDING and FLOATING (baloon); which the french where doing.

  • @braziliandoc08 The FAI (Federation Aeronautique International) "Officially" states that the first to get airborne is Clement Ader 14Oct,1897. The first controlled/sustained flight is Orville Wright 17Dec1903. First controlled/sustained flight performed by Santos Dumont is 13Feb1909. The first flight actually "observed" by the newly formed FAI was Dumont 13Nov1906. Dumont's 13Nov1906 flight was NOT a record of any kind, according to the FAI.

  • santos dummont flew an airship which had balloons. the wright brothers were the first to fly a practical plane aircraft

  • @braziliandoc08 so whats your point? Santos Dumont is and always will be in second place. The Wright Brothers flew first and i'm pretty sure no YouTube comment is going to change that. Calm down with your nationality relations, does it really matter what country a person is from?

  • i watched the whole thing!

  • The only evidence that the Wright brothers have their first flight, is a telegraphic message, and at the time were 6 people of witnesses.

The brazilian Santos Dummont flew in the presence of hundreds of people in France, his achievement was filmed, so he has the strongest proof.

Santos Dumont was recognized by the International Federation of Aeronautic, and Aero Club of France, as the first man to flight in a airplane.

Dummont a brazilian, Gagarin a russian... no americans involved!
