Hamelin plays the Scherzo of this sonata and says a few words about Medtner's music. Enjoy! :)

  • i am so glad about these comments.. thank you very much!

i didn't expect so many people to be interested - but how could i not expect?

it's like medtner's music got in control of me and already for more than one year i can't listen to anything else =))

  • And thank you, Neuwo. It's hard to find people who know Medtner at all. But it's so good to know that his music is appreciated by some people.

  • Yes, I agree with you. I am glad that I found such a video though. Unfortunately there is not so much about Medtner on the net.

  • Oh! (My apologies for cluttering this up with posts, but I'm on a Medtner binge right now.) Dover seems to be republishing book two of the sonatas. At least amazon.com is selling pre-orders for it at a discount. The book contains everything from opus 27 (Sonata-ballade) on. Also, in case anybody doesn't know, imslp.org is an incredible resource for all classical music and has a ton of Medtner since so much of his stuff is out of print =( =(

  • @loboris1995

I've been unable to stop listening to Medtner's own performance of his Sonata Ballade. I finally got opus 22 under my fingers and the damn (blessed) thing took me over a year! I really want to do his Sonata Ballade next, but I'm going to wait until after my recital. I'm also rather tempted to go after op. 51/1 since the sonatas require such immense time commitment. I've grown a lot technically from working on the piece. It amazes me that people are able to play ALL of his sonatas!

  • @rvn10rvn17 Have you tried Medtner's own recordings of the fairy tales? I love Hamish Milne for tackling Medtner's entier oeuvre, but his playing doesn't do too much for me. Medtner's own performances immediately grabbed me. nonnon86 has uploaded many (if not all) of Medtner's own recordings. Try the opus 20 set, opus 51 (No. 1 is my favorite), March of the Paladin, or really any of Medtner's own performances. I quite like Hamelin's performance of the opus 8 pair.

  • @wol4fram She's now expressed interest in working on some of his songs, for which I am particularly excited, because his songs are criminally neglected and absolutely great! I'm hoping that I can convince her to do opus 15 or opus 6 if not selections from them.

  • It's so exciting to see how many people love Medtner. A few years ago there were almost no Medtner pieces on youtube. Now there are pages of hits, including a number by amateur pianists, which means that his music is spreading beyond the cult of hardcore enthusiasts. I've been working on his op. 22 sonata for the past year and my girlfriend likes his solo piano music but was originally turned off by Susan Gritton's singing.

  • @rvn10rvn17

then, please, take a 'listen' into his six skazki opus 51, especially the first one (youtube.com/watch?v=H3TfA0CvmRA)! i am sure you will love them.

  • I caught the medtner virus now with all his sonatas^^

  • Wow I want to see the manuscript of this. How did Medtner manage to write so many notes???

  • IS HE SIGHT READING THIS?!

  • I agree with Hamelin so much. I couldn't appreciate medtner at first, and didn't like him at all. Now I can't stop listening to him. He's like a mixture of Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and a hint of late Chopin. Extremely romantic, almost unthinkably so. Thanks so much for posting this!
