Gunpowder was invented/discovered in Thailand, which was part of China at the time. Iron (which naturally led to steel) was also invented/discovered by the Thais when they were part of China. The Chinese used it for fireworks, since it burned slowly and with a fizz. It took the Europeans to make use of gunpowder in weapons. Smokeless powder came in just at the end of the 19th century. WW II German powder was more smokeless than Allied powder, making their gunfire much more difficult to spot.
