Pomona PD: Mother Drowns Child

PRESS RELEASE: At 9:37 PM, Monday October 20th, Pomona Police Dispatch received a call from the desk clerk of a hotel in the 1400 block of Garey Avenue regarding a woman attempting suicide in one of the guest rooms.

Officers arrived to find a woman being restrained by another person on the floor of the room, and a 5-year old boy underwater and unresponsive in the bathtub in the room. Officers immediately performed CPR on the child and continued life-saving efforts until relieved by paramedics. The child was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.


The initial investigation has indicated that the mother of the child, suspect NAVARRO, drowned her
son, victim SANCHEZ in the bathtub then attempted to take her own life by consuming over-the-counter sleep aids. She checked into the motel with the child earlier the same day. NAVARRO was also taken to an area hospital for treatment.




The on-call Pomona Police Homicide Team was called in to investigate. The suspect made statements indicating that she wanted to die because of problems in her life and didn't want to leave her son behind.

The suspect medically cleared by the hospital and was booked at Pomona City Jail for Murder.
