Europe's leaders will meet for a crucial summit today amid a political crisis in Portugal that threatens fresh trouble for the euro.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates will be in Brussels to help sign-off on a lasting game plan to defend the euro after months of turbulence caused by the financial crisis.

But Socrates resigned yesterday after parliament rejected his minority government's latest austerity plan, aimed at avoiding a multi-billion euro bailout along the lines of Greece and Ireland.

  • Today Portugal´s former prime minister socrates asked the european union for financial help!!!

I hope this country will get in a better situation Portugal is such a beautiful country

In economy they have got great potencials in Tourism and renewable energies wind and solarenergie because of its coasts!!! You have to believe in it. We will help you

Europe is a big family we have to stand together in a globalizated world. Best wishes from your friends in Germany

  • An EU "bail-out" is nothing more than a bank bail-out paid for by the taxpayer. Irish, Greek and Portugese citizens will now face cuts in services, more un-employment and shorter life expectancy......so the Euro experiment can survive untill the next crisis.

If the un-elected commission of millionares and the fat-salaried MEP's of the EU "parliament" really wanted to help, they could denote some of their wealth to Portugal. They will not though because it's easier to risk other people's money !

  • @Widukind75 Gracious words, thank you

  • The best thing is; take of the president and replace it to Monarchy, get out of EU. Portugese people muts change the mentality stop blaming and expecting from government so much, and be individual intraperneur. I am able to help my countrywith ideas every portuguse may contact me, we must be together beat this cancer, forget other countries we must have the courage we had centuries ago when we start navigating the seas to discover the world.

  • A melhor coisa para salvarmos o nosso pais e nao virarmos Grecia II eh sermos empreendedores, pq o governo por si so, nao vai adiante

  • @Widukind75 exactly As Portuguese I used to say that to another Portuguese, we have to believe now before it is too late. 8years ago I was in bankruptcy today I am prosperous in capital markets, this the example I used to tel to my friends, the problem in my country is the poor mentality most Portuguese people have to change the mentality.

  • @TheMerinight You have to tell the EU to go to hell. Then pull out of the EU and start using portuguese currency again. The false government will take all that nice EU bail out money, fill their pockets and run away again, forcing another EU bail out.

  • Please, stop these fights, what a timing you choose to be hating the others -.- it's a country that needs help, that's all, we are suffering, we need a hand, we will fight to be back on track....but being stupid is not going to solve anything -.-

  • @weslake898 it's easy to speak when you're not part of the country...we Portuguese didn't ask for this to happen, we're suffering with unemployment, tired of believing in a false government, everything is just falling apart....I would never even think of making fun of a country that is going through this....it's just too painful for us, what you see on the TV is just politics, what I see and feel everyday is different...

  • :( my beautiful country....is going down :( help, please!
