I've seen many fine guitarists live (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Leo Kotke and Carlos Montoya in particular), and have seen Jim Heath over 30 times. I remain firmly convinced that, had he chosen a mainstream genre, he'd be ranked with the legends, Hendrix, Townsend, et al.

That said, of the guitarists I've seen live, Carlos Montoya ranks as the very best. Alas, he was elderly when I saw him in '79 and has long since passed on. Look for his Farruca and Malagueña here to see a REAL virtuoso.

If you've never seen him perform live, do. Situate yourself at the edge of the stage, a bit to stage left of the center microphone. That puts you midway between Jim (Heath--the Reverend) and Jimbo Wallace, the bassist. Trust me, that's where you want to be.

The Rev makes it look so easy. He looks like he's loafing, but the most amazing riffs are coming out of that Gretsch, to the extent that you may catch yourself looking for the 2nd guitarist.

30+ times for me and I'll see him in a month.

Reverend Horton Heat is "old-school" psychobilly, along with The Meteors, The Cramps and The Quakes. The term seems to have originated with The Cramps, but The Meteors are viewed as the earliest band of the genre. The Rev is still active and is, IMHO, the best.

At 55, I'm living witness to the rise of punk, new era rockabilly and psychobilly. I still have my piercings, still wear Chucks (or Corcorans--forget Doc Martens) and I still mosh, though we called it slam-dancing and skanking.

I did the original TV → VHS → .mpg cap of this video in September, 2003, and shared it on eMule and WinMX for several years. It's nice to see that it's reached a much larger audience.

City Limits was a weekly show of alternative rock videos on MuchMusic in Canada for about ten years, starting in the late 80's.
