The GeForce GTX 280, the largest PC graphics chip ever made (1.4 billion transistors) has launched. In this video, we rip off the metal shell to see what it looks like. For the full review and benchmarks, see www.custompc.co.uk
I'm tempted on taking apart my GTX 280 in order to properly clean out the dust inside, my computer gets dusty fairly quick, with fear 3 (known to make some cards overheat) my gpu peaks at 83°C (with the ADT7473 sensor) and the pcb at 67°C (same sensor) btw 26-27°C ambient now. Should i attempt to clean my GTX 280 or the temps are good? If i open it, do i need to clean and put back thermal paste everywhere it's needed? Or just reassembly the card like a barbarian without using new thermal paste?
@nitroxide17 You probably screwed up putting the heatsink on properly. A small gap between the GPU and its heatsink will skyrocket temps. Also, your layer of Arctic Silver might be too thick (it should be a paper-thin layer).
Finally, some cards have proprietary thermal pastes or pads that are designed for the card in mind. Putting a common paste like Arctic Silver (which is still good so I think you messed up on the application part) could increase temperatures.
Hey I took apart my gtx 280....put on some arctic silver 5.....reassembled the card and the temps shot through the roof....like 115 degrees as compared to 80 degrees before...does anyone have any ideas on what I have screwed up?
How the FUCK is this.....taking it apart? your diagnosing it u cunt

Re-do the paste, watch temps.

most useless statement i've seen on this page. What about 1 gt 300 > 2x gt200. but aside from that, how do you know, noone knowes for sure.
