@ johnafielding: the solo (beginning of this movement) is played by a soprano sax. Shostakovich loved saxes a lot. He also put a whole section of saxes in Jazz Suite n.2, giving to the alto sax the most well known and beautiful theme of Shostakovich' music.

If you listen closely at 2:00 you can hear the ghosts of Piazzola and Shostakovich dancing together drunk.
