March 2007: Mary Whalen is relaunched from historic Dry Dock #1 after 5 weeks of repair during bitter winter weather. An enormous metal bow adorns her bow to celebrate the relaunch. This was the first time the ship was hauled out since 1991. GMD Shipyard tended to us with care. The entire hull was blasted, painted and zincs applied. Leaks and thin plate were repaired to ABS standards, and 2 internal spudwells were installed to enable the Whalen to visit communities that have no pier, or communities with those newfangled piers that lack tie-up infrastructure.
