Many people have a poor understanding of bird behavior. As someone who has had birds for several decades I have learned a little about how to read their body language, and to adjust mine to make them more relaxed.
A lot of this also boils down to proper eye contact, soothing sounds, etc. Geese are very difficult to understand. Although they can be territorial, they are really a flocking and highly social animal. What seems aggressive to people used to dogs and cats, isn't really meant to be aggressive from the animal's perspective. Loud noises followed by fast advances with an open beak look scary, but they may not be intended as such by the bird.
For example, note his cute little tail waggle. That's a sign of openness and curiosity.
There used to be a small flock of wandering geese on Gabriola Island's Harrison Way. I came across probably the last survivor recently and had a lovely chat with him.
