It's a great movie, mostly because of Daniel Day lewis interpretetion, but I always felt that his character is broken. I watched the film three times and I always had the feeling that the character is turning bad suddenly. There is no warning, there are no premises in the first half for what is he becoming. And that left me with a regret because I started to be attached by that strong type man character.

@touretul I think its pretty clear early on that he's a total misanthrope who couldn't care less about anyone else. The only reason he takes the boy is because he sees an opportunity for himself to make money. Or take the oil rig explosion; his adoptive son has just lost his hearing but what's most important to him is that he's just discovered an ocean of oil under his feet. He's bad from day 1.

@grindhouse141 yes, but you find that only at the end of the movie. at the begining you think that his a lonely father. actually, you find his dark soul only when he talks with his supposed brother after the first half and tells him that he doesn't want enyone to succeed.

and the accident of his son it's not a clue. he rescued him and then he took care of his job. at Cernobil do you think those man run with there families or stood there to fight the catastrophe? same thing at Fukushima.

@touretul You're wrong about the oil explosion. After the situation is somewhat under control Ciarán Hinds asks Daniel how his son is doing and Daniel acts like "how could you possibly be talking about anything other than the fact that we just discovered an ocean of oil." And Hinds gives him this very telling look and then walks off to check on Daniel's son. And in the earlier scenes it's not so much what he says, it's the expressions on his face that tell us everything about him.

@Redmist2000 I wouldn't go as far to say "better", but I thought he was fantastic as well. A lot of people saw him as over the top, I liked that about the performance.

I love QT, however, I must completely disagree with his comments on Paul Dano. I think it was the performance of a life time. I think he was as good, if not better, than Daniel Day Lewis. Not a popular opinion, but it's my opinion.

Interesting how QT criticises Paul Daniels' performance, especially coming from a director of his calibre. I couldn't disagree more with him, as ~I though Daniels' mealy-mouthed, self-obsessed preacher to be the flipside to Daniel Day-Lewis'. In other words, the perfect foil, a reflection of both mens personal vanity and greed. His performance was extraordinary, especially the subtle nuances when suppressing his own rage. Both men were astonishingly good in this film, in their respective ways.

im going to watch 'there will be blood' sometime again in the next few years but as of now its the most overrated piece of crap ive ever seen. its going to take a few years to prepare myself for the boring drubbing im in for. seriously though, nobody saw the ending of the priest coming? i saw it coming for 45 minutes.
