When a cat begins to yowl like that, you set it back down right that instant. Just because it's a domestic animal doesn't mean that it will put up with being handled in a manner it's not comfortable with, especially if the handler is someone the cat is not familiar with.

Cats like to be independent.
Their not animals you pick up and hold, Mine is sweet but she hates being held she'll gladey give you a head nuzzle but if you pick her up that's a nono.
Though I do it to make it her mad. : D
If a cat want's down let it down. And why hurt it? What if someone picked YOU up and held you against YOUR will? you'd be slightly pissed off.
