Retired correctional officer and Lompoc resident Jim Halbeisen is lucky to be alive and determined to resume his active lifestyle, despite the loss of both legs and a hand due to Sepsis.

The Sepsis hit Jim unexpectedly and rapidly. One day he was in his yard gardening -- the next day he was rushed to the Emergency Room. Few patients survive when they are as severely ill as Jim was when he arrived in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Due to the care he received and his friends' and family's support, Jim is back at home and recovering.
