Some examples of basic live stick sparring. In keeping with traditional learning associated with the ancient ancestral Filipino fighting arts we are not using armor which helps hone reaction times and increases realism.

  • @gwilburn Actually all those targets are valid and hit often, remember with no armor you don't dive into the fight like DB or WEKAF hence the description. I have the sore knuckles, elbows, ect to prove it. Just curious as to the number of DB gatherings you have fought in?

  • @PhilippineCombatArts I am training for my first DB Gathering which has not been announced yet. I have done SCA, teach a full contact Redman Fear Management class to men and women, and actively train the stick, knife and HTH.

    Here is my supposition:

    1. Train against an unwilling opponet

    2. Train in the adrenal state

    3. Train in combat time

Obviously it is important to have sessions where the purpose is control, so don't misinterpret my comments.

  • @gwilburn I hope you do realize this is simply one vid of one sparring session and only one format, and does not represent everything we do. Our members have lots of experience fighting all over the country against many different styles, including "Dog Brothers". As for the ferocity of our session, if you think its easy, you are always welcome to see if your assumptions about our training is true.

  • @gwilburn if you have the guts to spar with them you can try them. just don't based your comment in 1 video.

  • The only time I've seen this is from the Sayocs. Good stuff, way to put yourselves out there like that, definitely a step up from padded pillow fights. That said, I have fought at the Gathering, and was wondering what similarities you see between DBMA and WEKAF? I, for one, have never "dived" into any of my fights :)

  • I don't see an issue with the way that they're training in the video so long as it's not the only thing they do. I have my first gathering in a month (but I did the BTCOOC event already) so I'm well versed in hard sparring DB style. However, that puts a toll on your body and you really can't do it constantly.

The main issue in the sparring vids I've seen from these guys is linear footwork when sparring with live sticks. I struggle with the same thing but thought I'd point it out.

  • @PhilippineCombatArts Also, I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, just added my comments that I disagreed with the description.

I think that by wearing basic protection, a helmet, cup and gloves, you would be better served to hone reaction time and increase realism because you could really amp up the intensity without worrying about braining a close personal friend.
