Charlie Anderson is a farmer in Shenandoah, Virginia and finds himself (and his family) in the middle of the Civil War. He decides not to get involved in the war because he believes that this is not "his" war. But he eventually has to get involved when his youngest boy is taken prisoner by the North.

  • This is one of my four or five favorite films of all time. I am AMAZED by the scene at the beginning when Anderson gets right in the face of a Confederate press gang and tells them: "These are MY sons! They DON'T belong to the state!"

    Words to live by.

  • One of the most powerful movies I have ever seen.

  • I thought the family's reason for not being involved in the war was because they opposed slavery so they ignored the Union and disagreed with slavery so they ignored the Confederates.

  • YAY! Phillip Alford!

  • I don't have problems with that. 99% of blacks are extreme racists, but it's considered acceptable...

  • Another uninformed fool. Stewart flew bomber missions in WWII, he was part of the greatest generation.

  • He took part in a bombing run in 1966.

  • stewart did not fight in vietnam. this movie came out in the mid 60's

  • Please check your facts. James Stewart flew missions during WWII. He did not fly any missions in Vietnam, though he did join one bomber mission as an observer.
