"What's New" was originally written in 1938 as an instrumental called "I'm Free" by Bob Haggart, a member of Bob Crosby's Orchestra, and recorded as such that year with a marvelous trumpet solo by Billy Butterfield. As so often happens with great instrumental pieces, a lyricist was summoned, Johnny Burke in this case, and the song was turned into "What's New", a title derived from Burke's lyrics about lovers reuniting. The song has since become a standard recorded by many, famously so by Linda Rondstadt in 1983 with Nelson Riddle arranging and conducting. In 1959 Jesse Belvin recorded this version with Marty Paich arranging and conducting the orchestra, and it demonstrates what a great vocal talent Jesse was on the way to becoming until he and his wife, Jo Anne, were tragically killed in an auto accident the following year.

  • I have never heard of this lovely singer. Then I read why. In 1959 when he died I was 8. But he had a very nice version of one of my favorite songs. His version is right up there after Billie and Satchmo! Nice find Nocaro. Anything else by him?

  • @early60srcool I have posted many recordings by Jesse who originally was a straight R&B performer and songwriter (he wrote "Earth Angel" for The Penguins among others). Take a look at his recordings of "Funny", "Just To Say Hello", "Witchcraft", "Zing, Went The String of My Heart", all of which I have posted to YouTube for a sampling.
