Lesson Description:
The Phrygian Mode is based around the third note of the major scale. In the key of Eb, this 3rd note is G.
So this will be played as the G Phrygian Mode. To play the G Phrygian Mode you will start with the first note at the 6th string 3rd fret. The Phrygian Mode sounds exotic and heavy. It's a very popular mode for many heavy metal bands like Metalllica and Slayer.

The early Catholic church developed a system of eight musical modes (octoechos) that medieval music scholars based on ancient Greek modes. However, due to a misinterpretation of the Latin texts of Boethius, medieval modes were given the wrong Greek names. In medieval and modern music, the Phrygian mode closely related to the modern natural minor musical mode, also known as the Aeolian mode.
The following is the Phrygian mode starting on G, or G Phrygian, with corresponding tonal scale degrees describing how the modern major mode can be altered to produce the Phrygian mode:
Phrygian
G Ab Bb C D Eb F G
1 ♭2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7 1
