Shari Locher and Heidi Coleman jumped into action on separate occasions even though neither was on official duty.

Locher, an operations supervisor with Rural Metro Ambulance, came upon a high-speed motorcycle crash Sept. 4, 2008, while driving home on Interstate 5. She initiated CPR on the man and led a team of other people who arrived on scene to help until an ambulance arrived. Despite her efforts, the man did not survive.

Coleman, a nurse at Silverton Hospital, was driving with her husband on Highway 99 on Aug. 29, 2008, when they came upon an accident scene. An SUV and truck had collided. She provided support to the head and neck of one of the men in the truck and gave instructions to bystanders. When the ambulance and firefighters arrived, she translated Spanish for the paramedics.

Video production by Allied Video Productions. Photo contributions made by Willam Enos and Elizabeth Day of Emerald Light Photography.
