Fishtown USA (Part 1) As my father almost died a few days ago of cardiac complications and was rushed to HUP with chest pain & shortness of breath, (he drove himself there-hard headed Fishtowner! Of course.) But without a doubt this event shook me up, and in this video I acted towards settling all debts and disagreements I might have him tonight, right now. (In part 5 of this 5 part experience you can see the results-kind of, we still have a long way to go, but it's one action at a time right? - no one knew I had the no one knew I had the camara on) As you can see in this clip, I am filled with strength & determination as one day soon, (Sooner than later) I may never have this opportunity again and my father will become a memory. So here I go, this is my take off. My father (I'm even his Jr.), mother and everyone else I love who in my gene pool-four generations back, live in the beautiful peaceful & diverse place that is my home town and birth place --Fishtown --a very unique palce & culture that's impossible to put into words. When I hit 18 years old I said to myself I deserve Center City, no matter what the cost. As when you grow up in Fishtown, as a kid you take many, many walks into town, as it only takes about 20 minutes to a half hour to get there. I loved town as a kid, it was a magical place fully with wonder and surprises.
As a result today I live in Center City and currently have not left town once, not even to visit my family or anyone else anywhere for over a year, so this trip to Fishtown and out of center city is long overdue and I'm very excited about seeing, smelling and touching those gritty, tinny, little curvy, twisty unpredictable alley like streets that I developed into who I am today. Fishtown her I come -- I miss you and all your people. (Excuse me as in this video I call the sun set, the sun rise & it's 9 PM. I always said I was dyslexic. What the Hell I went to grade school under the El at Front & Allen and the Subway would go by at least every 10 minutes and rock the entire building with a lould roar and no one could even hear the nun's & priest speak - the large old fashion windows would even rattle. As a result-the school policy was, to use those few moments when the el train would rumble past our class room windows, (which happened all day long during every class-every day, in every class room in the school) as a silent prayer time. (this is one example of how poetic Fishtown life is - Note: This beautiful old historic school building, that went from 1st to 8th grade was demolished over 15 years ago due to it being too expensive to maintain and insure. I say that was B.S. and believe me the entire parish protested, back then catholic schools were on their way out anyway. But what a shame that it was when that sad day came, as I and all my family members in Fishtown went there for 4 generations, I was baptized, confirmed there, family funerals etc.. The church is still there, but the beautiful old school house use to stand right next to it which is now the church parking lot. The quaint school building even had a bell tower that was manually rung every hour on the hour-by the 8th graders of course. What can ya do - they were idiots right? As a result Fishtown no longer has a catholic school to represent itself and I'd say most Fishtowner's are catholic.
