The Ateneo High School first year English teachers requested me to allow them to document me while doing Shylock, for their classes. They wanted to save me from having to visit each of their classes (which I would have gladly done) for this speech.
I obliged, and since it would be in a more controlled set-up, I volunteered to put on some make up (Shylock is a much older character compared to Romeo, Macbeth and Hamlet, characters I do for the other year levels). I also grabbed pieces of cloth lying around in Hayes Hall to improve my characterization for the documentation.
It was Monday, after my classes, and I was running on antibiotics because of a brewing flu; my voice was already very strained. I thought, though, that all these disadvantages worked well for the performance.
I may have missed a word or two and skipped one line of Rolando Tinio's Filipino translation; I did not do that on purpose. It has been more than ten years since I did this role for Tanghalang Ateneo; this is the best I could do at that time and in that condition.
I hope you'll like it, and will find it useful.
Thanks to Ms. Jill dela Paz for this copy of the performance
awesome!
