Attacus atlas

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, and common across the Malay archipelago. Atlas moths are considered the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area [upwards of c. 400 cm2 (62 sq in)]. Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25--30 cm (10--12 in). Females are appreciably larger and heavier.

See, this is what I don't understand. People are commonly afraid of moths, but why? I can understand spiders (with fangs, venom and all), but moths? Moths are gorgeous, harmless, and they are often fluffy under their soft bodies, with collars of fur-like hairs. The most harmful thing a moth could do to you is eat your sweater, so you should only be afraid if you're Jimmy Carter or Mr. Rodgers.
