A rejected Alma (Geraldine Page in one of the screen's finest performances) goes off to meet her destiny in the haunting final scenes from the 1961 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams', "Summer And Smoke". The musical score is by Elmer Bernstein. Also one of his best.

  • @cb0355 Truly a superb scene with Elmer Bernsteins score and Glenville's

direction...coming together to make a timeless moment on the screen

  • Geraldine Page was one of finest actresses of the 20th Century!

  • She was the greatest english speaking actor of the 20th century.

  • @etrax2000 then again they were around te same age at this time

  • The entire line is as follows: "You'd be surprised how infinitely merciful they are. The prescription number is 96814. I think of it as the telephone number of God!"

  • SHE LOOKS A BIT LIKE MARYLYN MONROE, STRANGE ,EVEN WALKED LIKE HER, do you think is monroe had lived, she could have possiably done this role?

  • Poor tennesee williams, he must have lived all this as most of his female lead roles were actually based on his own misbegotten deeds

  • Thank you for this! My favorite actress in one of my favorite scenes!
