Note: Could also be a clinical pharmacist talking with patient at clinic.

*Update: Darvocet is no longer being produced due to its lack of efficacy, so for training purposes you can replace any mention of Darvocet with a more appropriate example such as Vicodin.

These training scenarios may be used to foster discussion among participants.

Instructor Preparations:
Consider how such issues are dealt with in your clinic/pharmacy/school/other professional setting and, if necessary, obtain clarification or additional helpful information on policies and procedures.

Discussion questions might include:
A) Was elder abuse present?
B) If so, which kind(s)?
C) What signs alerted you to potential elder abuse?
D) What, if anything, can/should the pharmacist do now?

Included in our free "Reaching Important Gatekeepers: Training Pharmacists about Elder Abuse" instructor's package are sample modules which can be incorporated into existing courses for pharmacy students:
• A brief introduction on elder abuse
• California laws pertaining to reporting of abuse presented in didactic and case-based formats
• A one-hour workshop further describing types and signs of abuse and how our systems respond
• Ideas for learning opportunities with agencies that investigate elder abuse and neglect
• Scenarios for discussion
