@chungiemunchin I always respect people's opinions, but I think you've been maybe to hard on this subject. Phil has a very distinctive voice, plus he's an extraordinary drummer and has written some legendary songs...You might not like them, but you don't achieve what he did only by chance. Peter was the shy one, whereas Phil was more of a front man IMHO. Everyone blames Phil for the Top 40 songs of Genesis while Mike and Tony tried them selves to write hits even as solo artists... Just a thought

This is the only tune Phil Collins should have sung with the band. He didn't do anything near that which Peter Gabriel did as a front man for the band. In short, in my opinion, he sucked as a front man. He must have sold his soul to the devil to have sold all those records after Genesis sold out. The songs they wrote and played when they were a constant presence on the top 40 radio stations were a study in mediocrity at its' best.

@quidseeker If you listen to his stuff with Flaming Youth you would see its how he used to sing even before he was in Genesis :)
-
Gosh, he really wants to sound like Peter Gabriel, especially in that short period after his leaving.

Ahh takes me back to when I was 14 (50yr old git now!) If I remember right Phil was inspired to sing this and other songs like it by the break up of his first marriage. (I'm sure plenty will correct me if I'm wrong!) nice footage, and enjoyed that Magog64
-
@Janne112 i do believe, though, that songs like Counting Out Time and Harold the Barrel were meant as parodies, meaning they were deliberately tryng to write "poppy" tunes
-
Actually it was a two parter with Phil and Peter (first song Phil sang "lead" on any Genesis album. also , foa all you fans, I dated a gal who's Dad was huge with Atlantic....Perry Cooper .renee was good friends w/ Phil and the band. He gave us backstage AND 8th row seats for the FINAL your at the Hollywood bowl on 10/14 08 We hung with Phil and his daughter Joely in the dressing room, got pis with Mike, chester and Phil. Tony and Darryl were at the buffet, but didnt have time to get autographs

I started with wind and wuthering and trick of the tail and selling england and the lamb... then went back and forwards and sideways w each player and era... each talented and gifted: we have been blessed with a lot of greta music by these musicians!

Well, yeah, the first album was pop for sure, they were trying to be the Bee Gees. And there was always at least one (sometimes two) pop songs on the early 70s records. But I don't think Gabriel or Hackett would have prevented them from going pop, even if they'd stayed Genesis would still have gone pop (as Gabriel did)...it was the 80s.
-
Well, Genesis have always had a little bit pop in them, but so have almost every prog band. Listen to thier first "From Genesis to Revelation" and also to songs like "I Know what I like" and "Counting Out Time" There has always been pop elements in Genesis, and after Peter and Steve left, the rest of the band expanded on that in an attempt to remain popular and still make money.
-
No, I definitely agree with that. It was the 80s, everybody went pop and cheesy in that decade, so you can't solely blame Collins. They were just moving with the times like every other band. I think Collins gets a lot of blame because his material was especially soppy, and Genesis albums started to sound more and more like his solo albums. But you could even say that the move toward "pop" started as early as disc one of "The Lamb" (but that was *brilliant* pop!).
-
I can agree with that. With Peter the pop would have been more in the "art rock" direction. I just think that people should stop blaming Phil Collins and Genesis for becoming more commercial. They did what had to be done, so they could continue to make money and release music.
-
Again, by 73/74 that had started to change and by 76/77 they were certainly making quite a bit, enough to get out of the *MASSIVE* debt they'd accumulated in the first few years of their career.
-
I can agree with this--they would have headed in a pop direction anyway. It's just that, with Gabriel and/or Hackett, it would have been a *good* pop direction. As pop songs "Shock The Monkey" or "In Your Eyes" are way, way more substantial than 80s Genesis. Some of their 80s stuff like "Duchess" and "Mama" is OK but the rest...urgh.
-
This is only speaking in terms of US success. "Genesis Live", "Selling England" and "The Lamb" were all top 10 in the UK and I believe all of them (plus Foxtrot) topped the charts in Italy. They were also voted best live act in the 1974 MM poll and were selling out large theaters in the UK and Western Europe. It's only because they had accumulated *so* much debt in the 1970-72 period that they didn't get out of it until after Gabriel left.

This is why I visit this site! I cannot believe someone had a LIVE version of this hidden little jewel. Kudos!
