The opening number, "Walk Him Up the Stairs," of the amazing musical Purlie! Starring Robert Guillaume, Melba Moore, Sherman Hemsley, Rhetta Hughes, and more! More Purlie! clips coming soon!
Norman Lear saw this play in 1970 and saw Sherman Hemsley and asked him to play in his new sitcom ''All in the Family''but Hemsley was commited To ''Purlie'',so Lear left the role open for Hemsley untill the show was finished.
This rousing opening number got standing O's when I saw it on Broadway years ago. It still gives me chills. Crank up your speakers for this gem. As Richard Pryor said in "Lady Sings The Blues"... "You ain't never heard this like this... CHURCH... TAKE YA HOME!"
Purlie broke ground on the Great White Way and ushered in Your Arms Are Too Short,Wiz,Raisin, and all that came after. It was commercially and artsistically successful drew ,Black Audiences to Broadway and established Melba Moore as a major singing sensation. Is this Broadcast available for sale?
