Despite Turkey's claims it has improved its human rights record, prisoners are still routinely tortured. But now the methods of torture have changed.

The prospect of EU membership has forced Turkey to reform its penal system. Arbitrary use of force is now illegal and larger modern prisons have been built. But now, torture is more likely to happen en route to prison or at police stations. "People are forced into cars and tortured without being arrested so there is no proof of police involvement," explains Human Rights worker Sukran Irencin. In prisons, "psychological abuse has replaced physical abuse," according to lawyer Ahmeh Tamer. However, even he believes: "these things are nothing compared with the physical abuse meted out in the past."

  • What about Guantanamo,9/11,iraq war and all the other crap wich is made by the USA?

  • american prisons are much better off than turkish prisons right? Those dicks critisizing turkish prisons close their eyes on Guantanamo. Endless torture, insults have been officially accepted even by the US government

  • @varnastan1965 I agree, they need to wake up and face the reality.

  • @mooneepondskid

OK OK.. "THEY" Kurds want to rip land off...

look if you just keep trying to skip my questions please stop trying to argue with me

  • @TurkFutbol10 You said.."you kurds want to rip land off". And as I pointed out,I'm not kurdish.

  • @mooneepondskid lmao..no dont assume things i didnt claim..i am not saying Turkey is perfect but people who hate Turks will do anything to make Turks look bad..i just dont like it when people make false claims about my country. or a biased view on the history

  • @TurkFutbol10 Mate,I'm anglo-celtic..lol I'm not kurdish. You don't have to be kurdish or turkish to have an informed view on the region. I guess you are blinded by your nationalism the same way many israelis are and can't stand ANY criticism of Turkey's government policy.

  • @mooneepondskid also its not Iraqi's who are really mad at us its the Kurds in N.Iraq who are hiding terrorists that attack Turkey later..and BTW dont try to hide behind Iraq when you Kurds want to rip land off Iraq just like you do with Turkey, Iran and Syria.

  • @mooneepondskid like the US totally asked for permission when they bombed the capital of Iraq following a invasion to look for WMD's which werent even there, now the US is in there taking the oil...not to mention Kurds always want help from US.. all Turks are doing is bombing PKK bases in the mountains what is that compared to what US does in sake for THEIR own security..

  • @TurkFutbol10 Iraq is a sovereign nation. Turkey crossed the border without Iraq's permission or consultation. And by your own admission they are there to kill PKK fighters and supporters.
