i understand geddy plays a fender jazz bass now, but he used a Rickenbacker to record A farewell.

I have the bit you missed out, it's basically octaves on A with some variation of this rhythm:
2/4 c c 7/8 q. q. q. q. sq sq
c = crotchet, q. = dotted quaver, sq = semi quaver
