I joined the Viking Princess in Dover Harbour at 03:00 on a very cold night, the first real cold night of the end of summer, we were joined by the four members of Relay team CSA018R, (an un-named relay team) consisting of Noel Sutton, Craig Ranson, Paul Naisbitt and Peter Lloyd. Also on board was a large Australian called Darren Kearney whos designated role on board was lifeguard.
We left Dover harbour onto a sea so calm that the moons reflection barely rippled on the sea.
Noel kicked off the swim, entering the water from the Shakespeare beach and heading straight out, due south. In fact it was due south all day, there was barely any tide and Reg piloted an almost straight course across the channel.
Noel gave way to Craig who continued the swim and he in turn gave way to Paul. Paul is an experienced channel swimmer who has undergone a hip operation and was swimming the relay to get back into the swim (pun intended) of things. The operation had taken its toll and Paul was a considerable slower than the other swimmers.
A beautiful sunrise and then Peter took us into the South West lane at 08:00, when he got back into the boat he declared the water to be glorious.
It was a very hot day and a heat haze obscured both the English and French coasts for most of the day which always is frustrating as it is not possible to gauge your progress.
Paul carried us into the North East lane and whilst Peter was swimming we sighted the Abbeyville buoy straight ahead of us and as the heat haze cleared we saw Cap Gres-Niz way off to the starboard.
Noel and Craig took us through the inner coastal zone and Paul entered with a chance of finishing but after his hour we were still short of the finish and so Peter entered the water to complete the swim.
Wissant bay was alive with large blue jellyfish about the size of basketballs, but I was informed that they were not the stinging type.
As peter followed the dingy ashore Darren took advantage of the weather a took a swim himself and followed Peter and the dingy towards the shore.
Peter stepped ashore West of Wissant at 15:42 completing the relay swim in a very respectable time of 11 hours and 42 minutes.
Great vid, Monello! And you have great music here! Wonderful!
