He heavy on da GH now and looks awesome.. for 50+... even brought his back up.. waaay thicker too.
-
He has very good genetics but he is not muscular enough. Also there is no flare to his quads, his calves are weak, his back development is not near what it would need to be. But he has (had) the genetic potential to win the Mr. Olympia.

wig alert....

didn't he come from South Africa

1988 Gary's one and only attempt to win the mr. olympia. He quickly jumped ship to the WBF (Vince McMahon's dead organization) because he was promised to be the main star. I think it was a huge mistake.

Arnold himself said that Gary looked like a champion but he struggled too much with his posing. His posing was often awkward and didn't flow too well but his conditioning was definitely in the top 3 for the whole olympia contest.

@tylersfs he went down the path of becoming a monster, his mass is double now :O

Gary Styrdom definately had the tools and potential to defeat Lee Haney in 89. If he just stuck it out for another year and worked on supplemental back work he could of won the Mr. O at least once.

No he didnt have everything else...he avoided front double bicep as much as possible because of his naturally flat biceps. He also lacked severly in lats. He screwed up when he signed with McMann and the WBF. Always great delts though.
I clearly remember about 20 yrs ago Shawn Ray describing Gary Strydom as looking "devastating in crunch-type poses but looks less impressive from the rear".
Gary looks great here, but clearly hide his weak lats purposely by hitting 90+% crunch poses and a single front double bi shot.
He looked great here to me - obviously no competition for today's mass monsters - but the lack of lats makes him look a little thin (for professional bodybuilding standards).

Gary looked great. If he had a better back he would have likely been Mr O. He had everything else.
