Imagine being across the world when someone you're inextricably connected to - art, creativity, friendship, rivalry, everything, Lennon/McCartney - is stupidly and suddenly killed.
The shock of it is still there. He's almost numbed. Stoic.
Not a heartless remark at all. As @DailyRecords2 says here, he's just pissed-off at the world here.

At first I thought he was...kinda heartless and uncaring. But I think I'm wrong. I think he was just very shocked and he probably couldn't stop crying after the shock wore off. Plus I can't imagine allowing myself to grieve over a friend when I'm being hounded by interviewers, you gotta put on a false front and act strong when you're really breaking down inside.
-
He seems to be venting his frustration at the interviewer rather than belittling the situation, that's why he abruptly says cheers thanks, its a very subtle venting of distress through emotional sarcasm. At least i think.
-
He looked emoitonally drained... As though he had been crying all day...
-
His reaction is exactly how mine would have been... I would have been in a state of shock, disbelief, a bit denial and probably a bit fearful... He reacted tough because otherwise his emotions would have overwhelmed him and he would have broke out crying... Self-defense mechanism... People really can't see that in his eyes? Am I the only one?

People have given Paul flack for the 'drag' comment, but you can see Paul's eating up inside with the anxiety on his face. I don't think he wanted to be seen bawling on TV. The fab four were real close, and you don't fight like the way they did unless you have feelings for each other. I think they would have buried the hatchet in the 80s and started working together. Maybe Paul thought that too.

yeah , ya just dont know what to say at times like these.

The shock and pain is written all over his face.

poor paul people cant leave him alone?
Paul's pissed-off at the world here, and rightfully so.

No man, really look at him, he's not looking in their eyes b/c it's death is a deep thing to deal with. He's not at fault for trying to hide his emotions; don't most guys? Weeping in public is generally not a guy thing, and the insensitivity of media bombardments during this tough time just to catch a statement on film. C'mon. let him grieve his own way.
