From what I can interpret, the song is about living life to the fullest and not compromising on the things most important to you; about how it's really every man (or woman) for themselves out in the world, so you can't always rely on people around you; how you can stand up for yourself and take care of yourself no matter what happens because in the end all you really have is yourself; "Spare us the rescue" means let us handle ourselves, we don't need your help. It's a song of independence.

i some what agree with @deadandgonesomewere, but i think hes just pissed at the world because he lost a girl. " were not lost we go were we want" its like hes explaining to some one that there okay, when someones telling him to move on. " it takes some dying to feel alive" , = it takes a heart brake to really feel alive. and "we mad peace with are lovely disease" they became friends after love was broken. a friend is a friend he don't need. referring to her , he don't want to be herrr friend.
