Yes, the "mad-friday" is - well - mad friday!
During the day, the fans (mainly brits, danes and the dutch) go on the track and do that sort of thing. In the evening everyone gets drunk to get rid of their beer (ahem) before the race, and then loads of fireworks are let off. Its a real carnival atmosphere, you absolutely HAVE to go.
