The City University of New York offers a low-cost college prep program, CLIP, to adult students who are not native English speakers. During 25 hours a week of classroom instruction, they improve their English language skills. The Altered Book Project allowed students to increase their comprehension, speaking and writing skills in a cooperative venture. Students from 17 countries and speaking 14 languages found ways to communicate by talking about their lives and cultures while they exchanged artistic ideas. As they painted, glued, stamped, and cut out the pages in their recycled books they learned about their own lives. This low-cost project can work for any age ESOL student in any classroom that has access to basic art supplies, old books, and a small amount of imagination. Language production increases naturally as students gain confidence in their language and art-making skills.
