Fire razes 10 shanties in Manila school zone

A fire believed to be caused by children playing with matches razed 10 shanties in a school zone in Manila Thursday morning, disrupting classes and causing heavy traffic.

Radio dzBB reported that the fire occurred at a row of shanties near a creek along San Marcelino Boulevard in Manila, and reached the fifth alarm before firefighters put it out 17 minutes later.

The fire started at about 10:12 a.m., causing tension among students of Santa Isabel University, Technological University of the Philippines and Adamson University.

Manila fire marshal Sr. Supt. Pablito Cordeta said they traced the source of the fire to children in the area who were playing with matches.

No one was reported hurt in the incident, but heavy traffic was reported along Ayala Boulevard and San Marcelino Boulevard. - GMANews.TV
