  • The thread, the one driving the carriage across is a piece of 20 TPI UNF threaded rod cetred at both ends. The cylinders are; for two minute cylinders 100 grooves per inch and for four minuite cylinders 200. if I were building again starting from scratch I think I would adopt the approach of the passive high rise machine, viewable on you tube.

Info on both machines is on the web at: the phonograph makers' pages. Mine is listed as the machinist's phonograph

  • sounds compressed, but thats just you tube,

you should of conected the output of of that device to youre computer so you preserv the audio onto a cd

  • The phonograph is connected to my stereo system int same way that one would connect a conventional turntable. The audio that we hear on you-tube is that recorded by my digital camera. To hear the machine connected through the microphone jack of my computer go to my web site linked from the page (Machinist's Phonograph)on the Phonograph Maker's site.

  • haha! a modern electric pickup with an old phongraph cylinder. pretty cool!

  • there are more of them on a web site called: "The Phonograph Makers Pages"

  • how did you make the threaded bolt? is that an original part or custom? what gauge is it for these cylinders?

  • @frederik027

There is a site called the phonograph makers pages: on this site you will find lots of info on making them. I particularly like the Passive High Rise player.

  • I've got that same soundtrack, Light as a Feather, on one of my Edison discs.

  • i have it. i have a bunch of old cylinder recordings if you want them.

  • i like the tune you played. do you know where i can get a recording of it?

  • Acutally this record was origonally played on a phonograph with a saphire stylus. It would take at least 200 plays before any differece in the sound quality could be heard. This is a wax amberol which are extremely fragile. I have had them break just from a slight temperture change. Edison blue amberols can be played thousands of times.
