Poor languages, Yiddish doesn't have a word for, use a dictionary!

אידיש אונטן Me discussing the widespread mistaken belief among many Americans that other languages "don't have" words for many concepts. I also discuss a similar belief among American Yiddish speakers who don't know the Yiddish words for many things and mix in English as a subsitute and point out the advantages of knowing the Yiddish words (being able to speak to people from other countries etc). I also talk about the phenomenon of code switching. Subtitles to come.

It's not just a problem for stateless languages. It's an issue for every language spoken outside of "its" area. So, you see immigrants do that a lot.

I think yiddish is based lekatchile on 3 languages: on the original german-kind dialect, the classic hebrew, and the native language of the place where you live.

Cause of that im calling yiddish as "the language with three feet" - on what it stands

yiddish "starts" using german and hebrew words, later slavish words and know english words. It grows... But I know what you mean!

There´s a huge discussion in europe in particular concerning the english influence. In Iceland and France they made special laws to "shelter" there languages and to invent own words for new things.

german has no word for "timing" .

But we also have so-called pretend-to-be-aglizisms like handy (instead of mobile phone, cell phone) and apostrophes on unknown places...

trotuar (pronounced "tratuar"), shosse, reklama, mizinets (yid. mizinke), konservirovanny (sup) - all Russian words (all, except "mizinets" likely of foreign origin for Russian also). Yiddish definitely borrows and integrates from other languages.
